Book recommendations for the lonely, sad and bored – Slammed

The days are getting shorter and one can think of far greater things than going out into the cruel outside world where cold winds and social interactions seem to attack one out of every corner. Life confined to the small spaces of one’s bedroom can get quite boring sometimes and maybe you’re tired of binge-watching Netflix until your eyes bleed. Well let me introduce you to this cool non-electronic thing which is called a book and can possibly entertain you for hours. So, listen up geeks, bored people or those of you who just clicked on this article because they felt like it. I will give you some book recommendations which will probably rock your world.

Gentleman and romance-hating girls, you are now advised to leave as this last book recommendation will probably not be up your alley. Or actually stay. Maybe you will like it and cry a bit because you’ve been single for an eternity.

Slammed by Colleen Hoover

18-year-old Layken is going through a rough patch right now. Not only does she have to cope with her father’s unexpected death, but when her mother gets a job and they have to move, she is feeling like her outward composure is slowly crumbling and her life is falling apart. She slowly regains hope when she makes the acquaintance of her attractive neighbor Will, who is not only eye candy but also incredibly funny and smart and he also has a passion for slam poetry. They both form a very unique and intense bond which is shattered when Layken learns the truth about who Will actually is. Their relationship is not only put to the test by that revelation but also by other things that life throws at them.

Colleen Hoover is not your typical romance author and I am able to say this because I’ve read numerous novels of hers and that woman gets me every time. This is not the cliché love story of boy meets girl, not the cute love story which can be serenaded by a Taylor Swift song, happy ending. Her plots are complex, the characters are hit with countless obstacles and many horrible traumatic events. The author manages to make her books about the strong characters which she created and not only about the story itself. Her stories contain valuable lessons, as real-life problems are dealt with in her novels, whether it is abuse or the death of a family member or other things. This book in particular is also written rather beautifully as it contains elements of slam poetry, which is quite a beautiful and modern way of portraying poems, in case you have never heard about it. This book will make you weep and laugh and come back for more and possibly start an unhealthy Colleen Hoover obsession.

Memorable quotes:

“Question everything. Your love, your religion, your passion. If you don’t have questions, you’ll never find answers.”

“Don’t take life too seriously. Punch it in the face when it needs a good hit. Laugh at it.”

“So you keep your ocean, I’ll take the Lake.”
